Mahindra Quanto: An ace in compact sports utility vehicles

Quanto is the first vehicle designed by Mahindra & Mahindra for the compact Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment. Though it is essentially a mini Xylo, Mahindra Quanto does get a spare wheel on the rear door and the tail has been chopped off to bring its length below the 4 metre mark. After just 3 weeks of its launch in September 2012, more than 5000 bookings were already registered. This figure shows that Indian customers were highly impressed by the practicality of this compact SUV.

Interiors of Quanto are almost same as the Xylo, but it is the space aspect on which the new vehicle scores high, since wheelbase is same as the Xylo. Mahindra Quanto features a good amount of legroom and headroom for passengers of all the rows, which makes it a good option in its segment at an affordable price. On the exterior, while the front bumper and headlights are similar to the Xylo, a new lip over the front grille and a definite V shape on the bonnet differentiate the two cousins from each other.

Quanto is powered by a 1.5 litre diesel engine, which belts out 101 bhp of power. The auto maker has offered four variants of this model, namely C2, C4, C6 and C8, which all are packed with an identical engine; however their interiors features differ. The advancements packed within the top end model, C8, include intellipark reverse assist, 2 DIN music system with CD/MP3/USB compatibility and safety features like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Braking Distribution (EBD) and dual airbags, among others. Mahindra Quanto reviews state that the model has been equipped with sufficient features, which are primarily demanded in this segment. It is a vehicle which can easily carry seven passengers and even if that means compromising a bit on engine performance, customers do not really mind.

Even though the weight of Quanto is quite high, it still scores a decent number of points in the fuel efficiency department. The model covers distance of 11.4 kmpl in normal city driving conditions and 16 kmpl on highways. However, these figures are lesser than that of segment leader Renault Duster. Interestingly, Mahindra Quanto reviews rate the vehicle as a worthy competitor even for premium hatchbacks. For a vehicle at this price with the space and the feel of an SUV, Quanto is a great car that provides value for money.
